Kashkaval on 9th Ave. near 55th St. serves up food from a fuzzy-bordered region I associate with warlords, vampires, and olympic strongmen. The word Kashkaval, in fact, is a kind of cheddar-like cheese found in Bulgaria, Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Romania. I know because I googled it.
More to the point, I just wanted a quick, non-committal, ethnic lunch in the bleak Hell's Kitchen neighborhood...and their bar/counter service looked just right.

Mr. Broadway - Where our journey begins
Food in New York City ranges from $500/person tastings in Lincoln Center to $1 Peking duck sandwiches dispensed from a kiosk in Flushing, Queens. I'm here to share the joy and bellyache of trying everything in between, especially those establishments that avoid any external appeal, yet offer a hint of potential treasure inside.
Today's wallflower of a restaurant is named "Mr. Broadway". It was actually on Broadway...near Times Square. Now what local would eat at a place called Mr. Broadway? Is there a "Paris Restaurant" next to the Eiffel Tower?
